La traviata at La Scala: a classic that always “makes our wrists and veins shake”. As is well known, the part of Violetta, requires a single soprano to have a variety of voices and souls. The German Diana Damrau, the most famous contemporary Violetta, has dramatic intuition, presence, backbone and the “voices” for a character that is alive and sorrowful until her final breath: the blogosphere has been full of talk concerning her recent performance in La Traviata at the Met. Alongside her, Piotr Beczala who returns to La Scala after last Season’s highly successful performance as Rodolfo in La bohème, and the great Verdi baritone Željko Lučić. Daniele Gatti has also shown his own enviable Verdi acumen throughout the world, in terms of his strength and lyricism. There is also eager anticipation for the debut at a La Scala Premiere of Russian director Dmitri Tcherniakov. His previous work at La Scala was a commendable Prokofiev’s The Gambler and an inspired Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, which took place entirely around a family table. The Germont family…
