General Information

Description

New production of Wozzeck at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels.

As part of its 2026/27 season, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie is staging a new production of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck (1925), entrusted to director, set designer, and costume designer Christophe Coppens, a familiar figure at the Brussels opera house. In his production, Coppens aims to explore "the chaotic emotional world of the soldier Wozzeck." He adds: "A tumultuous blend of violence and solitude blurs the boundaries between past and present, between reality and imagination. With a shattered soul, the protagonist is gradually consumed by a single, overriding obsession: murder."

Alain Altinoglu, the music director of La Monnaie, will conduct the production. He describes Wozzeck as an "immense masterpiece" that he has "always dreamed of conducting." According to the conductor, Alban Berg’s work is an "absolute treasure, intense, moving, and beyond words." On stage, the production features another artist well-known to La Monnaie: American baritone Scott Hendricks in the title role.

Further information is available on the opera house’s official website.
