Description

New production

Prior to the version by Verdi, Italian theatres of the past had for decades staged Rossini’s Otello, which was subsequently revived only occasionally. It hasn’t been staged at La Scala since 1870. The rarity of this title in the programmes of the Twentieth century was also linked to the difficulty of the bel canto required by this extraordinary “serious opera” and especially to the efforts necessitated in bringing together the three great tenors required in the cast: but here we will have an awe-inspiring trio, with Juan Diego Flórez, Gregory Kunde and Edgardo Rocha competing in the most daring and spectacular trills. The role of Desdemona, which Rossini wrote for his future wife Isabella Colbran, will come back to life through the voice of Olga Peretyatko, acclaimed in last season’s The Tsar’s Wife. This classic title features scenery and costumes inspired by the modernity of the famous German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer, and is conducted by John Elliot Gardiner, whose origins in Baroque music with original instruments guarantees a historically accurate interpretation of the period.
