Description

Sometimes combining ballet and melodrama helps lovers of one genre remember the existence of the other genre. In this case the combination is original and well conceived. The dancing tempts lovers of opera with two ballet gems: a classic like Le Spectre de la rose, which was conceived more than a century ago for Diagilev’s Battets rousses, with the Fokin choreography developed for Nijinskiy (and his legendary jump through an open window), and La rose malade, on Mahler's Adagietto (the one from Death in Venice), a creation of unbearable tenderness by Roland Petit for the great Maja Plseckaja. The melodrama is represented by a title which, with its red-blooded passion, will provide a healthy transfusion for the more anaemic ballet enthusiasts: Cavalleria rusticana, presented in Mario Martone’s acclaimed production, featuring the great Latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko and soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska who last Season put on a triumphant display as Abigaille in Nabucco. It is conducted by Daniel Harding, a star of the podium, who is no stranger to ballets.
