For more than two decades, Cecilia Bartoli has been one of the leading artists in the classical genre, and she is an experienced Rossini specialist. So close are the works of her compatriot to her heart that, as Artistic Director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, she dedicated an entire festival programme to them. Her long-standing attachment to our theatre has also been shaped by her interpretations of Rossini: she has already been heard in Zurich as Countess Adèle in the comedy of disguises Le Comte Ory, as Desdemona in Rossini’s rarely performed version of Otello, and in the brilliant role of Angelina at the première of La Cenerentola. No coloratura role in the Italian composer’s theatrical oeuvre is more demanding or full of contrasts than that of his Cinderella, whose dignity always shines through, no matter how she is repressed by her stepsisters. The special characteristic of the score is the effortless combination of the comical with the touching, and farcical comedy with an emotional love story. For this reason, it is considered by many to be Rossini’s maturest and most human composition.
