General Information

Description

New production at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
A co-production with the Royal Ballet and Opera in London.

After directing a highly acclaimed production of Strauss’s Salome at the Met Opera in 2025, Claus Guth returns to the New York stage with a psychologically profound adaptation of Janáček’s Jenůfa. The production premiered in London in 2021 with Asmik Grigorian in the title role and is scheduled to return to the London stage in 2025 with Corinne Winters.

In New York, soprano Asmik Grigorian takes on the title role of the young woman confronted with despair after being abandoned and betrayed. For this production, the renowned soprano Nina Stemme returns to the Met in the role of the stepmother, Kostelnička. Tenors Allan Clayton and Sean Panikkar round out the cast as Laca, the impulsive man who disfigures Jenůfa in a fit of jealousy, and his half-brother Števa, the father of her child before cruelly abandoning it. Conductor Tomáš Hanus leads the Met Opera pit for the first time.
