Description

Revival of Richard Jones’s production of Alcina at the Royal Ballet and Opera in London.

From September 15 to October 3, 2026, the Royal Ballet and Opera at Covent Garden presents George Frideric Handel’s Alcina. The London institution is reviving the production by Richard Jones that originally premiered in 2022. Acclaimed by both critics and audiences, the production transposes Handel’s opera into a hybrid world, contrasting a drab, austere reality with a colorful, enchanting—yet artificial—realm where the sorceress Alcina transforms the knights she bewitches into animals. The production is further enhanced by striking visual scenography. These elements combined to make it a production hailed as "entertaining, inventive, and original."

The 2022 premiere also featured a stellar cast, led by Lisette Oropesa in the title role, alongside Emily D'Angelo as Ruggiero, as well as Mary Bevan and Rupert Charlesworth as Morgana and Oronte. The 2026 revival reunites this same cast, with the addition of Beth Taylor in the role of Bradamante.
