A new production by the Lille Opera (France).

As the highlight of the ‘Autumn Constellation’ programme in the Lille Opera’s 2026–27 season, Handel’s Alcina is presented in a new production directed by Ewelina Marciniak. She takes her cue from Handel’s opera and the character of the sorceress who bewitches men to keep them captive on her island, inviting the audience to “explore Alcina’s kingdom as a place of infinite possibilities, where desire flourishes beyond accepted norms and the logic of possession. She also questions our ability to envisage this potential for freedom, which is so frightening to some that they suspect it of being a conspiracy.”

To bring this new production to life, the Opéra de Lille has assembled a cast led by Karine Deshayes in the title role, alongside Adèle Charvet as Ruggiero and Jasmin White as Bradamante. Accompanying them, the musical direction is in the hands of Emmanuelle Haïm, “a flamboyant ambassador of the Handel repertoire”, at the helm of the Concert d’Astrée.
