Description
New production.
From 19 to 29 January 2026, the Opéra-Comique in Paris will stage a new production of Jules Massenet's Werther... even though the theatre had refused to stage the premiere in 1892, believing that its audience preferred happier love stories (the premiere therefore took place in Geneva, before the Opéra-Comique quickly welcomed the French premiere the following year, buoyed by the work's success).
In 2026, the Opéra-Comique entrusts this new production to director Ted Huffman, who has just been appointed head of the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. The musical direction is in the hands of the enthusiastic conductor Raphaël Pichon, leading his ensemble Pygmalion – continuing his exploration of 19th-century lyric drama, having already conducted Lakmé at the Opéra-Comique in 2022.
On stage, the Opéra-Comique brings together a highly appealing (young) cast: Pene Pati in the title role, Adèle Charvet as Charlotte (replacing Marianne Crebassa, who was originally announced) and Julie Roset as Sophie.
More information is available on the opera house's official website.
