Janáček's enigmatic and captivating opera, The Makropoulos Affair, features the character of Emilia Marty, a famous opera singer with a mysterious life... who has lived for over 300 years thanks to an elixir of immortality. An immortality that appears to be both a gift and a curse.

At the Royal Ballet and Opera in London, director Katie Mitchell takes on Janáček's work and creates a new production that aims to reinvent the libretto ‘through a contemporary prism, exploring what it means to love, and at what cost’.

In the cast, Ausrine Stundyte returns to the London stage to play the mysterious Emilia Marty. Conductor Jakub Hrůša, music director of the Royal Opera, leads the London orchestra.
