General Information

Description

Giacomo Puccini’s last opera, Turandot, establishes the repressive societal order of a sombre, fairy-tale China. This is crystallised in the bloody rite of revenge of Princess Turandot, who lures hordes of suitors with her cold beauty and delivers them to the executioner by means of unsolvable riddles. This society is unsettled by a group of strangers surrounding Prince Calaf who, unrecognised, faces the three riddles of the cruel princess, solves them and is ultimately rewarded with her love. Puccini’s uncompleted score is captivating in its sophisticated exoticism and a masterful mixture of tragedy and whimsical humour. It reveals a panorama ranging from grandiose crowd scenes to passionate pathos between Turandot and Calaf, to Ping, Pang and Pong, based on figures originating in the Commedia dell’arte. The internationally celebrated soprano Nina Stemme continues her collaboration with our theatre as Turandot, while the rising Italian tenor Riccardo Massi can be heard as Calaf for the first time at Zurich Opera House.
