Description

New production

The most breathtakingly brilliant Mefisto to grace our stages in recent years deserves an opportunity to inhabit this role to its fullest extent. Playing Mefistofele as a mixture of Latin lover, prankster and demon in Gounod’s Faust opera, Erwin Schrott has already given Festspielhaus audiences a taste of his greatness. He worked so well in tandem with the tenor Charles Castronovo that the idea of bringing them back as Mefisto and Faust in Arrigo Boito’s best-known opera “Mefistofele” was irresistible. The Italian composer of the late Romantic period combines influences of Verdi and Wagner in his musical work: rousing choirs, intricate melodies accompanied by music that is almost cinematic in intent – an intoxicating mix that audiences the world over find unforgettable. A new discovery that is also a reunion with old friends.
