Let us turn to the most-performed Italian opera in the world. Before Rossini, nobody had managed to write operas that flowed with such speed. And the frenzied pace, the enthusiastic clockwork madness we would all love to experience, and the swirling verbalizations of crazed singer-marionettes, are exalted even more by concertatos stunned into immobility. The success of the celebrated show by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, which by now is more than forty years old, though it wears its age well, is due to its fidelity to the music, which is followed as though the director became the choreographer of a sung ballet. Massimo Zanetti conducts a cast with maestros of lyric opera such as Leo Nucci and Ruggero Raimondi treading the boards together with their pupils from the Teatro alla Scala Academy.
