Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Messe en ut mineur « Grande messe »

"Long before the composition of his Requiem, Mozart signs another immense masterpiece of sacred music: a Mass in C minor (1783). He begins to write this great composition for Vienna, when he has just come from s freedom from its Salzburg tutelage.
To conquer the public and the ecclesiastical authorities of the Austrian capital, he gives the best of himself, pushing the quality of the writing to its peak, inspired by the style of the great masters Handel and Bach discovered thanks to Baron Van Swieten who had opened the doors of the imperial court library to him, where autograph manuscripts were kept. The music imagined by Mozart in this Great Mass is incredibly dense, like a cathedral of sound where each note contributes to spiritual elevation. Great contrasts, a virtuoso choir, a rhythmic orchestra: everything contributes to creating an impression of solemn and sensitive grandeur.
To top it off, Mozart writes a sublime soprano part, which will delicately perch in the most incredible trebles; this voice is that of his young wife, Constance Weber, singer with legendary virtuosity. Suffering at the time of writing this score, Constance was the object of all the attention of the young Mozart, who in a way dedicated to her this tailor-made masterpiece, a veritable monument of sacred music, the Great Mass of Mozart is a magnificent culmination of the Viennese classical style."
