Description

New Production for the 2026 Bayreuth Festival

For its 150th-anniversary edition, the Bayreuth Festival is presenting a new production of Das Rheingold (part of the "RING 10010110" project) offering a resolutely contemporary reinterpretation of Wagner’s universe. Conceived as an artistic experiment, the production seeks to create a dialogue between Richard Wagner’s legacy and modern creative tools. Central to the concept is the innovative use of artificial intelligence on stage: not as a character, but as a force for generating imagery, capable of producing a visual world in constant flux. Far from merely illustrating the action, the projections aim to place 150 years of Ring history at Bayreuth – spanning national myth, political upheaval, Romantic utopia, and aesthetic deconstruction – into a broader perspective.

The staging relies on a delicate balance between the presence of the singers and a shifting visual environment. The performers serve as the fixed point within a scenic cosmos traversed by textures, light, associations, and constantly reconfiguring layers of imagery. The production does not claim to offer a single Ring, but rather multiple superimposed visions, as if the work itself were becoming a space of memory and metamorphosis. In this light, the production presents itself less as a conventional staging than as a living reflection on what Bayreuth, Wagner, and the Ring cycle have become today.

Musical direction for the occasion is entrusted to Christian Thielemann, an iconic figure in the Wagnerian repertoire. His interpretation of Wagner’s score promises to highlight the dramatic and orchestral scope of the cycle’s prologue, underscoring the narrative tension, the richness of the leitmotifs, and the architectural power inherent in Das Rheingold. Under the conductor’s baton, the music serves not merely as a backdrop for the action; it aims to drive a stage experience in which sound, imagery, and theatrical memory intertwine.

The cast brings together several distinguished Wagnerian performers: Michael Volle embodies Wotan, alongside Klaus Florian Vogt as Loge, as well as Anna Kissjudit as Fricka, Evelin Novak as Freia, and Christa Mayer as Erda. Jochen Schmeckenbecher takes on the role of Alberich, while Gerhard Siegel and Mika Kares appear as Mime and Fasolt, respectively, alongside Peter Rose as Fafner.

With this new production of Das Rheingold, the Bayreuth Festival pursues a dual ambition: to honor the legacy of Wagner and the festival itself, while using digital technology and AI to explore contemporary forms of theatricality – thereby fostering reflection on how a timeless masterpiece can continue to reinvent itself.
