Description
New production, entering the Metropolitan Opera’s repertoire
Following the premiere of his opera The Hours in November 2022, composer Kevin Puts returns to the Metropolitan Opera in New York with his first opera, Silent Night (2011), which won a Pulitzer Prize. Inspired by the true story of the Christmas truce of 1914, the opera recounts how French and German soldiers in the First World War left their trenches to exchange gifts and sing Christmas carols with the enemy.
A poignant portrayal of shared humanity in the most inhumane of circumstances, the work takes a highly cinematic approach – the libretto for Silent Night, written by Mark Campbell, is adapted from the film A Christmas Truce – described by critics as a “deeply moving emotional experience” at its premiere in 2011.
Silent Night joins the Metropolitan Opera’s repertoire in a production directed by James Robinson, who “transports the audience to the heart of the Western Front battlefields”. The production features a cast including soprano Elza van den Heever and tenors Ben Bliss and Rolando Villazón. The opera is conducted by maestro Dalia Stasevska, who is making her debut at the helm of the Met Orchestra.
