General Information

Description

“Bring me the head of Jochanaan!” King Herod must fulfil the outrageous demand of his daughter Salome – bound by his promise to give her whatever she wants for one single dance. In the moonlight, the princess kisses the severed head of the prophet who entranced her so profoundly. Herod commands his soldiers to kill Salome. This final scene – equally inebriating and disturbing – was difficult to endure for some of the audience at the world premiere in Dresden in 1905. And yet with his one-act opera based on Oscar Wilde’s drama, Richard Strauss hit the nerve of the time, which demanded exoticism and decadence. Even if the opera was initally banned at some theatres, "Salome" quickly began her triumphal march across the world’s stages.

More information is available on the official website of the opera house.
