The Metropolitan Opera in New York opens its 2026/27 season with a new production of Verdi’s Macbeth (the first in 20 years), directed by the young director Louisa Proske – also a co-founder of the New York-based company Heartbeat Opera, which specializes in reinterpreting classic works for contemporary audiences.

This new production boasts a stellar cast: Verdi baritone Quinn Kelsey sings the title role opposite soprano Lise Davidsen, a Met Opera darling for several years, as the power-hungry Lady Macbeth, whose destructive ambition dooms them both. The cast is rounded out by tenor Freddie De Tommaso as the valiant Macduff and bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as Banquo, Macbeth’s friend turned victim.

This opening production is entrusted to the direction of conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, music director of the Metropolitan Opera.
