From Georges Bizet's Carmen to Maurice Ravel's Boléro, the Iberian Peninsula has long been a musical goldmine for the French. But the authentically Spanish music of this prosperous era is that of the Andalusian Manuel de Falla. Brief and dazzling, his only tragédie lyrique, The Brief Life, strikes with an inspiration that would remain just as powerful in the ballet L'Amour sorcier, composed ten years later, upon returning from a long stay in Paris. From a gypsy camp to the Albaicín district of Granada, the characters all belong to the people, and the music borrows generously from flamenco, transfigured by the voices and orchestra."
