General Information

Description

French creation.

Played at La Cuisine.

Inspired by a news item that hit the headlines in Jonestown (USA) in 1978, Guru tells the story of a sect living in seclusion on an island. Marie, a new follower recently arrived on the island, encourages the disciples to resist the guru. Seeing his arrival as a final challenge to take on, Guru, the guru of the sect, decides that the "great journey" that he has so much announced will finally take place.
Describing with great finesse the mechanisms at play in groups, power conflicts, money and sex, Laurent Petitgirard and his librettist Xavier Maurel offer us with Guru an allegory of our modern societies, where mental manipulation is much more present in everyday life than we think.

“To stage Guru is above all to propose the creation of a great French Opera and to forge powerful links with the Nice Opera and its team. Depict the monster who, through his aura, drags down all the disciples of the sect with his fall. Track down what seduces us by destroying us! A promised dream that becomes a nightmare, with Marie at the center alone in resistance. For me, it is the possibility of preventing, denouncing lies and the opportunity to organize conferences on the subject around this show. A threat to our societies and unfortunately a still active possibility. »
Muriel Mayette-Holtz

For this French creation, Guru will benefit from a first-rate cast (Armando Noguera, Anaïs Constans to name a few on the singing side, and Sonia Petrovna in the role of Marie), from the presence to the staging of one of the great figures of French theater and director of the Théâtre National de Nice, Muriel Mayette-Holtz, and that of the composer himself at the baton!
