"The artistic avant-garde that was German Romanticism inventoried the legends and songs of popular traditions, a treasure largely despised by the educated classes. This passion of ethnologists sowed vivacious seeds: Des Knaben Wunderhorn, the collection of Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim in Gustav Mahler, or in Hans Krása Hänsel and Gretel and The Town Musicians of Bremen, two tales by the Brothers Grimm.
The weak and vulnerable heroes of these tales prevail in solidarity, intelligence and cunning over those with the power of life and death. This is the lesson of Brundibár, an opera for and by children, officially created in the Terezín camp in 1942, which director Jeanne Candel describes as “above all an experience of resistance”. Resist, no matter what. Krása was gassed in Auschwitz in 1944 because he was Jewish and considered a "degenerate" musician. But his work is still there."
