General Information

Description

For this rare Handel, Sandrine Piau invites us to the banks of the Nile to experience the adventures of Queen Bérénice. This is the last work written by Handel for the Covent Garden Theatre, during a period of crisis marked by the increasing disaffection of the London public for Italian opera. Created on May 18, 1737, Berenice only had four performances in total, in front of sparse venues, before falling into oblivion and only reappearing in 2001 at the Karlsruhe festival. And yet Handel deploys all his expertise in the art of opera seria, on a rich and complex libretto where political and romantic conflicts once again mix.

More information is available on the official website of the Theater.
