Belshazzar is an oratorio in three acts whose booklet is taken from chapter 5 of the book of Daniel (Balthazar's feast), supported by the prophecies of Jeremiah and Isaiah. The rather pessimistic work shows the collapse of the Babylonian empire and is a lesson on the fragility of empires.
