Description
New production for the Beaune Festival, at the Théâtre de Beaune
A pastoral opera in three acts by Paolo Lorenzani, premiered before the King in the Galerie des Cerfs at the Château de Fontainebleau in September 1681.
In September 1681, Paolo Lorenzani’s pastoral opera Nicandro e Fileno premiered in the Galerie des Cerfs at the Château de Fontainebleau in the presence of the king Louis XIV. The composer (the Queen’s music master) had arrived from Rome, delivering a work that drew upon both French and Italian musical traditions. Contemporary accounts attest to the work’s success and the King’s praise (which earned Lorenzani the fierce hostility of Lully); yet, the piece gradually fell into oblivion.
On July 17, 2026, the Beaune International Baroque Opera Festival invites audiences to rediscover Nicandro e Fileno in a new production by La Palatine (an ensemble in residence at Beaune) under the artistic direction of Guillaume Haldenwang and Marie Théoleyre.
